Lockdown, Skateboarding And Nice Weather – May 2020

I can always count on May.

Why do I say that? Because May has historically been one of the happier months for me. And May 2020 was no different!

Here’s a quick summary of what happened in May:

  • I had a wonderful birthday and turned 27!
  • May was by far the most social month for me since the start of this virus.
  • I skateboarded as often as possible! Hell yeah.
  • I went on another weekend getaway, this time with a group of friends.
  • Just like last month, I had a couple of sleepless nights again.
  • My girlfriend and I were (semi) quarantined for a week.

How did these things – and many others – influence my happiness in May?

Here are my personal happiness ratings, neatly presented in a simple line chart:

My average happiness rating in May was 7.88, which is pretty happy! Despite some bumps in the road, May was a relatively smooth and happy month.

Positive happiness factors

Here are the positive happiness factors that I tracked this month.

Just like last month, I want to highlight how much skateboarding has increased my happiness lately.

Ever since I started skateboarding again in July 2019, I’m having a blast. After a day of work (from home), I often try to squeeze in an hour of skating at the local park. Of course, it looks a bit silly, because:

  • I look like I’m having an early mid-life crisis, with my dumb runner’s outfit and cap backwards (it prevents my hair from annoying me).
  • I’m surrounded by 9-year old kids with scooters. (we skaters call them scooter kids)

But then again, landing tricks is the most fun ever. I’m really happy that I tried skateboarding again, and I really don’t care what I look like. As long as I’m happy doing it!

Here’s a cool line of tricks that I recently landed at my local park.

There’s still more to my life than just skateboarding though!

Relaxing in the beautiful weather

The weather in May was absolutely terrific. Sunny days, no rain, nice temperatures and lots of time spent outside.

It was amazing.

My girlfriend and I tried our best to maximize this beautiful weather, and I think it worked!

A lot of my positive happiness factors are related to my girlfriend:

  • 5x Walking
  • 11x Relaxing
  • 23x Relationship (makes sense)
  • 6x Running

My girlfriend and I started running together, often during work or after dinner, and it’s been great.

A peek inside my happiness journal

I always re-read a part of my journal when writing these monthly updates. It’s a nice moment to look back at how I did throughout the month, and I always catch some interesting things that I wrote.

The 22nd of May was a typical and happy day during this pandemic. I rated this day with an 7.75, and wrote the following about it in my journal:

A nice and relaxing day. Woke up at 09:15 and slowly woke up, cleaned the entire apartment and made my own cinnamon buns for the first time. They turned out fantastic.

I’m not ashamed to say that I ate 9 of them today, lol.

We spent the rest of the day walking outside (over 2 hours), which was nice. Not much else to mention, watched Community on Netflix in the evening, continued with our puzzle for a while and went to bed relatively early. Nice and easy!

You might read this and this: “what a boring life…”

But I really like it this way. Nice and easy. I’m enjoying my life like this.

Turning 27

I turned 27 in May, and as usual, my girlfriend made sure it was a great day for me.

My girlfriend surprised me with a mini 1-day holiday in the backyard of my parents. She had secretly been planning this for 2 weeks, and sneakily set up the perfect camping spot. It included a fire, wine, marshmallows and games.

The next morning, I woke up with presents and a small cake.

No wonder why this was the happiest day of the month! πŸ™‚

Slowly building a social life again

Even though the virus is still headlining the news every day, normal life is slowly starting up again.

Here in the Netherlands, the numbers are currently that good that we’re allowed to host some social gatherings again. As a result, my girlfriend and I got to meet some of our friends again. After having been isolated for so long, this was a very nice change!

Just like always, I also try to catch up with my friends over an online game of Call of Duty or something, which is always fun.

At the end of the month, I even went on a nice weekend getaway with a group of friends. πŸ™‚

As a result, May was my most social month in a long while.

Negative happiness factors

Before concluding this happy update, here are the negative factors that influenced my happiness in May:

I was a little agitated on some days in May. Why? Because my girlfriend and I had to get in quarantine for 7 days.

What happened?

We visited my brother, and even though we didn’t hug or shake hands, we also didn’t always keep the advised distance of 1.5 meters.

12 hours after our visit, my brother experienced symptoms that could be the virus. Even though the symptoms were not severe enough to justify a test, we were instructed to stay quarantined for 7 days… This sucked, as the weather was great and we couldn’t even go out for grocery shopping.

Luckily, after 5 days, my brother did get his test and it turned out negative, so it was all good. Even more luckily, my brother’s symptoms disappeared, so it’s all good in the end.

The last days of the month included some sleepless nights again. It’s the same thing that has bothered me in the past as well:

  • Multiple deadlines at work stack up and are due in the same period.
  • I get busy and work long days.
  • There’s not much time left at the end of the day to decompress and unwind.
  • I lie awake in bed until 05:00.
  • The cycle repeats.
