The year 2017 had a great personal start for me, and that continued well into March. Despite the fact that nothing truly outstanding happened to me, I was really enjoying life. I enjoyed all the things that I knew made me happy. It’s why I call this Monthly Happiness Report ‘My Great Life’. I want to show you exactly what influenced my happiness at the time.
Let’s get started with the basics! The table below shows a summary of my happiness ratings.
I have tracked my happiness on every single day since December, 2013. By tracking my happiness, I have learned exactly what makes me happy and what not. I was able to use this data to the fullest advantage during March, 2017. My happiness was relatively high, with a monthly average rating of 8,02. It was up quite a bit from February, which was also a great month.
You might be wondering how I’ve used my happiness data to the fullest advantage? I’ll talk about that later. Let’s first have a look at the data itself.
The chart below visualises exactly what my happiness ratings looked like throughout March, 2017. I have sprinkled some comments here and there to add some context to this data.
When talking about happiness ratings in a graph, this is really one of the best looking graphs I have been able to make in this series.
Hell, my worst day of the month was on the 11th of March, which was a lousy and relatively boring Saturday. But “worst” isn’t really the best word to use here, because I still rated that day with a 7,25! By that time, I had experienced far worse days.
But let’s dive a little further into this data!
The table below shows all the happiness factors that influenced my happiness in March, 2017.
This is another great table, as it shows you all the things that I enjoy doing. You know, the things I am passionate about.
Have a look at the positive happiness factors. There’s so much goodness in this table: I enjoyed a boatload of running, spending time with my girlfriend and relaxing. I think it’s easy to understand now why March, 2017 was such a happy month for me.
I really enjoyed my simple life at the time.
I enjoyed a nice day with one of my best friends on 25th, when we explored some beautiful parts of the Netherlands. This turned out to be one of the best days of the month. Spending time with my friend was a huge positive happiness factor that day!
The weather was also getting better again. I don’t mind a little cold every now and then, but I do mind being stuck in traffic. And with bad weather comes bad traffic jams. I had experienced my fair share of traffic in the previous months. Luckily, my morning commute got better as the weather improved! The traffic did not have a negative effect on my happiness at all in March! 🙂
Even better, I got to enjoy beautiful mornings again from the comfort of my little car.
I might sound like a broken record, but I really want to emphasise how nice March, 2017 was. I was living my life without any big issues to worry about and was surrounded by the things that made me happy.
ThereforeI want to show you another excerpt of my happiness tracking journal. This entry will show you what was going on in my mind at the time, and how I really got to enjoy my life. I wrote the following on 16th of March, and I rated that day with an 8,5. This was one of the best days of the month!
The streak continues! These couple of days have been great. My relationship is currently a great source of happiness for me. I have to give credit where it’s due.
Work was alright. I’m having trouble staying productive, but things are moving along nicely. I picked up my girlfriend after work to do some shopping, and made a killer lasagna at home. Had dinner with the entire family, including my sister and her boyfriend. I always treasure those moments. Nice food and nice to have everybody together.
After dinner, my girlfriend joined me on a run again. She’s actually starting to like it?! Who would have thought lol. It’s nice to know that I can motivate her to come with me, and I hope she will eventually get bitten by the running bug as well! We took a nice bath together afterwards, which is always nice.
I’m feeling really relaxed now. I’m going to stay awake a little longer to relax some more. Tomorrow is the last day of work for this week anyway. And I’m not even that tired, despite the lack of sleep this week. I’m just feeling great!
I think it’s clear now that March, 2017 was one of the better months of my life. Let’s see how this influences the chart of positive happiness factors!
Positive happiness factors
The chart below shows all the positive happiness factors of March, 2017.
Just like the month before, I found a lot of happiness in the things that I’m passionate about. I love to run, make music, game, relax and spend time with the people I love. Those are the things I enjoy doing most.
It’s nice to see all these factors featured in this graph!
My relationship was pretty much perfect at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with my girlfriend. My girlfriend probably has the biggest influence on my happiness. I have even tried to find out how much my relationship correlates to my happiness. So far, I haven’t found a factor that has a bigger influence!
Let’s have a quick look at the list of negative happiness factors.
Negative happiness factors
The chart below shows all the negative happiness factors of March, 2017.
There were 11 factors that had a negative influence on my happiness in March.
The worst happiness factor was my work. My work was quite challenging at the time, and even though I liked it, it was sometimes a little overwhelming. My work had an equal amount of positive and negative influence on my happiness: both 4 days! I want to eventually analyse the true effect of my work on my happiness. Keep an eye out for my “Happiness through…” section!
I also had a bit of stress and negativity in March.
Well, on the 21st of the month, I was quite busy at work. The projects were getting close to multiple deadlines, and I was in the middle of a busy team. On that day, I was going to a close friend of mine after work. I was really looking forward to an evening of relaxing and catching up with my friend. However, on the way to his place, I accidentally ran a red light…
I saw the light change to orange, and thought I would make it. I missed it in a split second, and only later found out there were traffic cams on the intersection. SHIT!
So I knew I had just flushed EUR 230,- down the toilet, by figure of speech. And it made me really pissed off at myself. Even though I had a great night with my friend, the negativity still had a bad influence on my happiness.
And of course, I received the fine one week later, and had to pay up. I was able to find my picture of the event, so I am now able to present you what my car looks like when running a red light… Yay, I guess?
Anyway, March ended with another relatively minor negative event. Two of my wisdom teeth were removed at the surgeon. So on the last day of March, I was feeling a bit whacky on pain killers and an aching mouth.
But in general, March was a fantastic month for me. These couple of negative happiness factors certainly didn’t keep me from being happy!
And with that said, I want to wrap up this Monthly Happiness Report. 2017 continued to be an awesome year, and I wouldn’t mind if the rest of the year would be the same. Let’s hope for the best! 🙂
