Another month of happiness tracking is already finished. March FLEW by. Good things were happening in my life, and it reflected on my happiness. One of the leading factors for my increased happiness was the weather. March was officially the start of Spring in the Netherlands, and the weather was acting all CRAZY. We started the month with snow! But it quickly made way for a couple of beautiful sunny days. These days were simply amazing and had a big positive influence on my happiness.
But there’s a lot more I want to talk about!
Let’s get started with a simple overview of my average happiness ratings.
So last month – February – was already a BIG improvement. I had started the year 2018 with a relatively bad month. Even though I finally moved in together with my girlfriend, my happiness was negatively impacted by a big streak of sick days…
This improved a lot in February, and I’m very happy to say that this improvement continued in March!
My average happiness rating of March was really high: a 7,90!
Let’s see how this month became such a happy month for me.
The chart below visualizes exactly what my happiness ratings looked like throughout March. I have added some comments here and there to add context to this data.
Look at that CONSISTENCY! 🙂
I didn’t experience a single significant dip in happiness during March. My happiness ratings never dipped below 7,50, which is still pretty good in my book.
But it’s not all about the happiness ratings, of course. What about the happiness factors?
The table below shows all the happiness factors that influenced my happiness in March 2018.
So March was officially the first month of spring, right? Well, I guess the weather didn’t quite get the memo on time, as the first couple of days in March were freezing COLD again.
We were also treated with a nice bit of snow here in the Netherlands. The weather was really strange this month!
I want to show you another entry of my happiness tracking journal.
I wrote the following on the 2nd of March, which was a pretty great day. Remember last month, and why I was suffering from all these headaches? It turns out my gut feeling was right, as my glasses were the cause. I wrote about it in my happiness tracking journal. I rated this Friday with an 8,0 on my happiness rating scale!
This is what I had to say:
A great day. My time at work was fine. I was able to work nicely at my own pace, and I feel like I’m in control of my projects. Hell, I even spent some time working on my website lol. If the IT department is monitoring me, I bet I’d be fucked. It wouldn’t actually surprise me. Let’s hope they don’t keep tabs on me.
Went to the optician to get my eyes measured, and it turns out it was about time. My required cylinder power has increased from 0.25 to 1.00. Crap… I need new glasses, and I need them fast. This explains all the headaches I was having…
ANYWAY, it’s finally weekend. My girlfriend and I are going to the “Veluwe” national park in the Netherlands tomorrow for an overnight stay. I’m excited for it.
Spent the night playing Battlefield with my brother, which was nice. In the meantime, it started snowing outside. I didn’t even notice. They said this “Siberian bear” should have left by now, but it’s still freezing COLD. I long to a nice run outside in nicer temperatures… It should get better after this weekend. Going to bed now!
My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our quiet weekend in the Dutch forests. It was still freezing cold, but we were really able to enjoy the nature together. Also, the hot chocolate and coffee inside the cosy restaurants only tasted better. 🙂
It was a great weekend, and it resulted in one of the best days of the month.
The rest of my month was a lot similar to this wonderful weekend. As the weather got increasingly better throughout the month, I found it easier to find happiness during the day.
As a result, the next weekend was beautiful as well. I wrote the following on the 11th of March, which was one of the most relaxing days of March. I rated this Sunday with an 8,50 on my happiness rating scale!
What a fantastic day. I really didn’t do that much, but it was just extremely relaxing. The perfect Sunday, basically.
I woke up nice and easy, and had a relaxing breakfast with my girlfriend. Did a shitload of groceries for the rest of the week.
The weather was great this day, and it felt like the first real day of Spring had arrived. So we decided to drive our bikes down to the nearby woods. We just walked around a bit and enjoyed the sun. Visited a restaurant and had a lovely beer outside in the sun. Sundays don’t get much better than this!
The evening was just as relaxing. Enjoyed a nice dinner together, watched some soccer and played Battlefield for a brief while. I also went out for a run. Man, today was great.
The weekend is over now, though. I’ve had a lovely 2 days, and am not looking forward to work… I expect the next couple of days are not going to be as good. Let’s hope for the best!
I think these excerpts show you a lot of what my life was at the time! You see, I track my happiness like this every single day. They allow me to reflect on every good thing that happens in my life.
Let’s first have a look at all the positive happiness factors of this month.
Positive happiness factors
The chart below shows all the positive happiness factors of March 2018.
You might see that this chart shows pretty much all my passions.
I loved spending time with my girlfriend during the beautiful spring days. We enjoyed spending time outside in the sunny weather, which really increased my happiness. The apartment we had recently moved into is conveniently located next to a small forest, which was our go-to destination when the sun was shining!
I also really got back to fully enjoying running again. During the previous month, I sometimes didn’t get to enjoy running as much due to the FREEZING cold. But this month was much better. Running outside had a fantastic influence on my happiness in March!
Let’s see what factors had a negative effect on my happiness!
Negative happiness factors
The chart below shows all the negative happiness factors of March.
Only seven negative happiness factors! GREAT.
When I finally got my eyes measured at the start of the month, I knew my lacking eyesight were causing my headaches and tiredness in February. It took a little while before I actually received my new glasses though, which is why my headache was a negative happiness factor twice during March.
When I finally received my new glasses, I was amazed at how much my eyesight increased! It was just so much better. I didn’t suffer from these nasty headaches anymore for the rest of the month. Peace was restored in my quiet happy life. 🙂
Oh, I almost forget to mention that I made a pretty big fuck-up at my job on the 9th of March. I discovered a calculation error I had made, that slipped through the review sessions with my seniors… I felt like a piece of shit, and was pretty stressed as a result. How could this have happened?!?!
I was lucky enough that this mistake did not have any business impact. I caught it just in time! However, it did impact my team by quite a lot. As a result of my mistake, my team had to spend quite some time recalculating all the related products… I felt really stressed as a result, but it was fortunately fixed quite quickly.
I hope I will learn from this mistake…
And with that said, it’s already time for me to wave goodbye to another monthly update. This was a rather short update, but it’s simply because March was overall a very relaxing and happy month for me.
I don’t have to live an exhilarating life in order to be happy. I am already very happy if I can spend relaxing time with my girlfriend and by doing the things I love. The lovely spring weather only added to my happiness.
I was ready to continue this trend in April!!
I hope these posts give you a general idea of what tracking happiness means to me. Because I’m tracking my happiness ratings and factors every single day, I am fully aware of what I need to do in order to become as happy as I can be. With that said, I hope I can somehow inspire you to also start tracking your happiness. 🙂
